Living on the auto pilot can rob us of our potential for living life more fully. We begin to practice stepping out of automatic pilot by bringing mindfulness to aspects of everyday humdrum existence.
Getting lost in your thoughts and feelings can rob us of the quality of experiencing the now. Once we start becoming more aware of our thoughts we can gather our scattered mind and get back to appreciating the present moment.
When our attention is caught up in the past or the future, we can get trapped in unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. Mindfulness helps us recognize these automatic reactions; understand them as normal human experiences. In this way, we can extend kindness and compassion to ourselves and to others around us.
When we show interest and friendliness towards all of our experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant, it keeps us grounded and teaches us to respond skillfully when difficulties arise, engaging with values most important to us and opening us up to moments of happiness, peace, and gratitude.
